RUSH FOR WARRANTS OF FITNESS CAUSES CONGESTION
(Special.) WELLINGTON, May 16. Motorists who have been inconvenienced by the rush for warrants of fitnes are likely to be given some period of grace at tiie next six-monthly examination, as the Transport Department is investigating complaints of delay through congestion from Otago and Christchurch in particular.
This was stated to-day by the Minister of Transport, Mr O’Brien, who made it dear, however, that sixmonthly warrants would be needed owing to the large number of very old cars on the road. Some, lie said, had been found without brakes. He believed .future renewals would be handled without difficulty. “ We consider,” added Mr O’Brien, “ that the peak of the rush is over, and we will consider methods of stopping further trouble after discussions with the municipal authorities. The transport inspectors try to help, not to persecute motorists. They often give warning to offenders, but if there is persistent breaking of the law there must lie prosecution.’,’
