3,000 RAILWAY WAGONS ON ORDER FROM U.K.
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, April 28. Delivery of 3,000 wagons, one of the largest orders ever placed by the New Zealand Railways Department, is expected to begin from the United Kingdom next month. The wagons are of the LA type—all metal, with a carrying capacity of 12 tons. If the present delivery arrangements are implemented, 100 wagons will arrive in the Dominion towards the end of May, 400 in June, and thereafter approximately 550 a month. LA wagons are at present being produced in the New Zealand railway workshops, but at the rate of 10 a week. If the workshops undertook a full-time wagonbuilding programme, which woljfld be 'impossible in "view of the heavy repair schedule, production could he stepped up to 50 a week. The wagons are used for the transport of coal and heavy cargo. They will be allocated mainly to the North Island.
