POWER BOAT RACING

SHIELD WON BY INVINCIBLE CONTESTS AT VAUXHALL Conditions on the water were ideal for a series of power boat races conducted at Vauxhall on Saturday under the auspices of the Vauxhall Pojver Boat and Sailing Club and the Otago Power Boat Club. All the competitors gave excellent performances, there being few withdrawals because of mechanical failure, and good handicapping produced some very close finishes in the; four races decided. The races for the Sell Memorial Shield and the Wakefield Cup were held under the joint control of the two clubs. The former was won; by Mr W. Sise’s Invincible, which ran consistently throughout the series. In the Wakefield Cup race there was a close finish between the long-handicap; boat Nancy (J. Finlayson) and Ann (A. Nye), the latter •crossing the line 3sec ahead of Nancy, while R. Shaw’s Mercury, the fastest boat of the fleet, was only IBsec further back. Good races were also seen for the Bishop Cup and the Bishop Trophy, both being won by Frances (F. C. Coster). The detailed results are as follows : Wakefield Cup (for all-comersj 10 miles). —Ann, 18min 30sec (R. Nye), 3h 50m 58s, 1; Nancy, 41mib (J. Finlayson), 3h 50m 58s, 2; Mercury, scr (R. Shew), 3h 51m 16s, 3. Also started: Frances (29min 30sec), Sadie K. (14min 30sec), Ajax (9min 30sec), Invincible (4min). Frances actually crossed the finishing line first, blit was disqualified for exceeding her declared speed by more than 10 per cent.
