Clean-up For Bookmakers. ’ The victory bf the outsider Caughoo in the Liverpool Grand National Steeplechase gave bookmakers one of their greatest clean-ups in history. Only two people took the winning tote 5s double on the Lincolnshire Handicap and the Grand National._ They each received £8,889 10s. A big London bookmaker, David Cope, said: “I accepted £IOO.OOO in doiihle bets on the Lincolnshire and the National arid did not pay out on one. As far as I know, nobody pulled off the double with a bookmaker.” Two Horses of Same Name. A galloper and a trotter, both known as King’s Ransom, each won a race on Saturday. While the trotter took the first race at the Manawatu meeting, 'the galloper won the Hastings Hack Cup. This incident recalls the fact that two horses with the same name once fought out the finish of a hurdle race at the Waikato Ttirf Club’s meeting in- February, 1880. These two horses were known as Harkaway, one being a chestnut and the other a brown. The race was worth £3O, plus a £2. sweepstake, and the distance was two miles The chestnut Harkaway won from his brown namesake, and Sportsman was third. To avoid confusion the layers of odds referred to the two horses as Harkaway and Brown Harkaway. It is not uncommon for trotters and gallopers to have the same name, but it is on rare occasions that they win on the same day. Century Dividend. Wee Logan, winner of the Otipua Trot at Washdvke on Saturday, returned his supporters a win price of slightly over a century, and a place dividend of close on a quarter of a century.
