Autumn Millinery Features Toques and the Floral Bandeau

TOPICS FOR WOMEN

Small polled brims and crowns of surprising height, of the coachman or postillion persuasion, are characteristic of the hats for autumn which have just been introduced. Once again they deliver a jolt to any preconceivftl ideas on the subject of autumn milinery, for, as is often the case with first suggestions, in severity they appear to offer no compromise to the face which they do not suit. The situation is never as depressing as it appears, however, for further curiosity will reveal many modified versions, and much variety. Small toques are here, softened by ostrich tips curling profusely about the crowns. Other models are suggestive of poke bonnet styles, with gathered crowns and plain straight brims with a downward trend. One tiny model in rich ruby velvet showing at present is trimmed very simply by two full-

blown flowers of the folded velvet set in front. Sequins feature on the crowns, black velvet styles and a number of the more formal toques show a side drape either of lace or of velvet, these occasionally being used for novelty on the familiar beret shapes. Another novelty features a plain sailor of ivory velvet, closely stitched in black . throughout and plainly banded in ribbon. , . Aage Thaarup, the Queen’s millinery designer, has been presenting an ambsing mode, which he calls “ buttoning up.” It is his compromise with the new bun-like hair style. One may go to a function with merely a cleverlyfashioned bandeau outlining the hairline on the forehead, with the hair showing on the top. A fitting hood slips on and buttons if an occasion arises when the bandeau will not do, and alternatively one can wear the crown and dispense with the bandeau.
