REGISTRATION OF BUILDERS
REQUIREMENTS SOUGHT ARE MODEST ANSWER TO SIR JAMES FLETCHER (P.A.) WELLINGTON, March 5. “ There is nothing in the proposed Bill for the registration of builders to prevent a person carrying on business as a builder without being registered, but he is limited inasmuch as he could not perform any work to a greater value than £l5O in total cost,” said Mr J. Mount joy. secretary of the 'New Zealand Builders Federation, in reply to a statement made in Dunedin by Sir Janies Fletcher. “ The Bill would permit a person unable to become a registered builder to enter, at least, into business as a jobbing contractor,” added Mr Mountjoy. “ All that the proposed Bill requires of a young man desirous of starting in business is that he is capable of carrying out building construction work in an honest, workmanlike manner, haying knowledge of fhe industry in which ne proposes to become engaged; and further that he is in a financial position sufficient to permit him to carry out satisfactorily the work he undertakes.
“Can any reasonable man in this Dominion object to such conditions. Surely no one would expect that any Tom, Dick or Harry, without any knowledge of the trade, and without any financial standing, should he allowed to come into the building industry, and take upon himself the work of a builder to the detriment and expense of the person for whom he performs the work.”
