AIR-SEA RESCUE

CATALINA LANDS ON TASMAN BOY SEAMAN WITH APPENDICITIS (P.A.) AUCKLAND, March 5. While the New Zealand cruiser Bellona steamed in wide circles to calm the sea, a Catalina flying boat of the R.N.Z.A.F. Air-Sea Rescue Service landed in the swell of the Tasman over 300 miles from Auckland this afternoon to bring to hospital a 17-year-old member of the crew who had developed acute appendicitis. The Bellona, which left Auckland on Monday to take part in combined fleet manoeuvres with the Royal Australian Navy, was slightly west of the Three Kings Islands to-dav when an urgent radio message was received in Auckland that the man was seriously ill ou board. Within less than an hour the Catalina was bound from Mechanics Bay to intercept the cruiser. The sick member of the crew, Seaman-Boy. David Thomas Kite, was transferred to the aircraft and reached Auckland this evening. He was operated on for appendicitis at the naval base and his condition is satisfactory.
