THE TALLY
WHAT GREECE OWES BRITAIN
MANY MILLIONS SPENT
(N.Z.P.A. Special Correspondent.)
(Rec. 10.35 a.m.) LONDON, March 4. The ‘ Daily Telegraph’s ’ diplomatic correspondent says that the reports from the United States that British troops may be retained indefinitely in Greece if the Americans agree to provide financial support are incorrect. There has been no change in the British Government’s intention to reduce its forces in Greece by 50 per cent, as soon as possible, and to withdraw the remainder as soon as is judged practical. Mr Bevin is reported to have told a meeting of Socialist members that the British forces in Greece will be reduced to one brigade by the spring, and full withdrawal completed by summer. So far Britain has spent £15,000,000 on the maintenance of • the Greek armed forces, and £11,000,000 on equipment for them; has granted Greece an interest-free loan of £lO,000,000 and waived repayment of the Greek war To this substantial financial support must be added the cost of maintaining the present British forces, in Greece.
