BRITISH POSTAGE STAMPS
COLLECTORS DESIRE BETJER TYPES NEW ZEALAND ISSUES CITED AS EXAMPLES (N.Z.P.A. Special Correspondent.) ( , (Rec. 11.15,a.m.) LONDON, March 4. The British National Stamp Exhibition, which opened this week at Central Hall, Westminster, has revived the campaign by British philatelists for greater variety in the design of British postage stamps. New Zealand stamp issues, particularly the recent victory stamp series, were frequently mentioned as illustrations of the types of stamps British collectors would like to see produced by the British General Post Office, and the ‘ Evening Standard ’ to-day publishes a reproduction of the New Zealand penny green showing a view of Parliament Buildings to explain collectors’ arguments.. The New Zealand health stamp issues were also frequently commended by British collectors, and recently a suggestion was made that a similar system ' should be adopted in Britain. A petition in favour of British pictorial stamps is 'being circulated among all visitors to the exhibition and 500 signatures were obtained in the first four hours. .It is hoped to obtain 500,000 signatures before presenting the petition to the PostmasterGeneral.
Members of the British Stamp Collectors’ Association described the general design of British stamps as amongst the dullest in the world.
