JONES-STEVEHS CONTEST
HUH VALLEY CONTROL QUESTIONED (P.A.) WELLINGTON, March 4. The New Zealand Boxing Council has refused to allow the Stevens-Jones contest at Petone on -Saturday night to proceed pending an inquiry into the' control of boxing in the-Hutt Valley. Announcing this to-day, the secretary of the council, Mr G. P. Aldridge, said that as the position was the subject of an inquiry, no further information would be available at this juncture, He expected a Press statement to be release! at the conclusion of the inquiry. ' * > The chairman of the Hutt Valley Boxing Association, Mr L. Stewart, said to-night that he had called an emergency meeting of his association fo.r tomorrow night. “My association will welcome any. inquiry,” lie added./ Mr Stewart said he interpreted the decision as .the suspension of his association in the meantime. No charges had been laid against the. association, though he had asked for them; ■ Commenting on Mr; Stewart’s statement, Mr Aldridge said that as the inquiry was being made into the controlof boxing in the Hutt Valley, the contest on Saturday, which was under the jurisdiction of the Hutt Association,, could not be allowed to proceed. The charges, against the association would be conveyed to it at the proper, moment.
