TONNAGE OF SHIPS
RECORD FOR PORT YESTERDAY’S TOJAL 87,107 i 1 A record for the Port of Otago was established yesterday afternoon when ships totalling 87^107 tons gross were berthed at the wharves at Dunedin and Port Chalmers. With the constant movement of vessels from hour to hour, in and out of the port, it was only for a short period about 2.30 p.m. that the accomplishment was enjoyed—but the number of vessels were of a sufficient total gross tonnage to eclipse the previous record for the port established on January 5, 1926, when 83,980 gross tons of shipping was berthed at the wharves. Throughout this week the waterfronts at Dunedin and Port Chalmers will experience a busy period. Yesterday, in addition to the American vessels,.Yancy and Merrick, there were seven overseas ships, three coastal vessels, the dredge Otakou, and the ketch Ranui, in the port. The Port Chalmers arrived at, 2.30 p.m. to berth at Dunedin alongside the City of Eastbourne and the Fort Acton. The other ships at Dunedin were the Wellpark and Hartlepool, and the coastal vessels, Katui, Wainui, and Kairanga, while Port Chalmers accommodated the Orari and Port Jackson,, in addition to the American vessels. The Otakou and the ketch Ranui (in dock), were also at Port Chalmers. A short time after the arrival of the Port Chalmers the Fort Acton sailed, and later in the afternoon the Katui and Wainui left the port. The icebreaker Burton Island arrived at Port Chalmers at 5.45 p.m.
