SHIPBUILDING CONTROL
REMOVAL ANNOUNCED £3,000,000 WORTH CONSTRUCTED (p.a.) Wellington, March 4. The office of Controller of Shipbuilding, as well as the emergency powers relating thereto,. were abolished by. a notice in the last 1 Gazette.’
In a statement to-day, the Minister of Supply and Munitions, Mr Sullivan, referred to the work of Sir James Fletcher as controller and to the magnificent achievements of the shipbuilding industry during, the war. The Minister said'that although the wartime shipbuilding programme was completed some time ago, the winding up of the activities and contracts of the Shipbuilding Division of the Marine Department, which operated under his administration, had only recently become possible. Mr Sullivan said that New Zealand’s requirements during , the war had Comprised 53 vessels of an aggregate value of £1,270,000, and the requirements for our American allies had totalled 387 small ships, aggregating £2,213,000. At one time the services of a number of coachbuilding firms were employed in the construction of a particular type of barge for the Americans.
