OPENING OF EAST LONDON DOCK FIRST SPEECH IN SOUTH AFRICA

CAPE TOWN, March 3. The East London railway and harbours administration gave Princess Elizabeth a present of five unset diamonds, worth £3,700, to make her a brooch when she opened the new graving dock' at East London. The Princess made her first public speech in the Union. She said: “You have atremendous heritage, a big country waiting to be developed, rich in its peoples, enterprise, and in its mineral and natural resources.” , The dock took four and n-half years to build at a cost of £2.500,000." It will accommodate 17,000-ton liners.
