CLOSING DOWN

PORT KEMBLA HEAVY INDUSTRIES

STRIKES AND STOPPAGES ON GOALFIELDS RESPONSIBLE

(Rec. 12.5 p.m.) SYDNEY, March A. The basic heavy industries ' at Port Kembla- are tapering off operations because of the coal shortage. Already 150 men have been laid off and further dismissals are expected. Strikes this year have already cost 390,000 tons of coal, and to-morrow work will stop at all New South Wales collieries while the miners hold mass meetings. This will mean a further loss of 50,000 tons. After conferring to a late hour last night, the central council of the Miners’ Federation did not make a decision as to whether it would recommend a general coal strike. The meeting is continuing to-day. Metal Manufacturers Ltd., Port Kembla, has been forced to stand 150 men down because of the coal shortage. The Commonwealth (Rolling Mills Proprietary Ltd. , has had no gas for its furnaces since midnight, but is continuing to operate as. many units as possible. The blast furnaces will continue in operation for a few days longer, but will close down as stocks of coal fail. The stoppages of industry are due mainly to the refusal of the men at the two big collieries to go back to work on the instructions of the northern miners’ executive.
