He was the Infante Don Jamie, the Spanish Pretender’s brother, who arrived at Madrid airport with his wife, on his way from Lisbon to Barcelona. Five thousand Royalists cheered them and waved handkerchiefs and flags. Madrid’s aristocratic section was bedecked with national colours in response to a privately-circulated appeal to give the visiting exiles a good welcome.
Madrid’s mayor, the head of General Franco’s household, and members of the nobility were present at the airport, out no members of the Government '
i lie police did not place obstacles in the way of people using their own 1 transport to reach the aerodrome, but took note of the registration numbers of cars taking people to meet the plane. The Royal party later left by plane for Rome via Barcelona.
