BIGAMOUS MARRIAGE
YOUNG WOMAN SENTENCED
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, Feb. 18. A plea for leniency because of the unfortunate history of the prisoner’s first marriage, and because she was only 21 when the offence was committed, was entered by Mr A. J. Mazengarb, counsel for Kathleen Mavourneen Smith, aged 25, a domestic, who appeared before Mr Justice Fair in the Supreme Court to-day for sentence on a charge of bigamy.. Mr Mazengarb said that after- leaving her husband, the accused had supported herself and b er two children. After the second form of marriage she had lived in fear of discovery of her bigamous marriage for six. years. Bigamy was always a serious offence, said His Honor, but in. this - case the 5 probation officer felt that' the prisoner could be released on probation. The accused would be placed on probation for two years, ' ■ '
