NEW CARGO VESSEL
SERVICE SPEED OF 17 KNOTS ADDED UNIT FOR NEW ZEALAND TRADE (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Feb. 18. . The New Zealand Shipping Company has received advice tliat arrangements have been completed for Mrs Jordan, wife of the High Commissioner, Mr W. J. Jordan, to launch its new motor vessel, Haparangi on Thursday at John Brown and Co.’s yards at Clydebank. _ The M.V. Haparangi is a sister ship to the M.V. Norfolk, now completing in the builder’s fitting-out basin' for the associated line, the Federal Steam Navigation Company. The new ship will join earlier vessels in the refrigerated and general cargo trade between Britain and Australia and New Zealand.
The Haparangi is a large ship, her overall length being 561 ft, her breadth 70ft, her gross tonnage 11,300, and her net tonnage 6,650. The vessel luus a raked stem, a cruiser stern, a singe funnel, two pole masts, and a workr manlike array of derrick posts. The total capacity of her insulated space is about 510,000 cubic feet, while her general cargo,’ space totals 250,000 cubic feet.
The accommodation is of a high standard, being concentrated in midship deckhouses, and the crew are generally in two-berth rooms on the upper deck level. . The vessel will be propelled by two sets of diesel engines capable of developing 12,800 b.li.p. to .enable her to maintain a service speed of 17 knots under loaded cpnditions.
