LIGHTNING: THEN BLACKOUT.

STOP PRESS

SYDNEY, February 19.—Lightning, which struck power wires, delayed trains and blacked out several northern suburbs last night. Vivid firework displays occurred when several wires were struck, and an electric train which passed through the damaged wires was enveloped in sparks and flashes. The lightning followed a southerly change, which has lowered the temperature in Sydney, and light rain has been falling since. There were numerous narrow escapes, the most spectacular of which was that of eight life savers when lightning struck the South Curlcurl Surf Club within a few feet of them.
