WRITTEN OFF AS LOST
SUPER-FORTRESSES IN RUSSIA
LITTLE VALUE FOR COPYING
(ltec. 8 a.in.) NEW YORK, February 15. ' The United States had long since written off the four Super-Fortresses which failed to return from raids on Japan during the autumn and winter of 1944-45, and then showed up in the Russians’ possession, said an army air force spokesman. Pie described as negligible any copying value they might have for other countries.
The Associated Press Washington correspondent says that so far as could he learned the United States at no time attempted to recover the SuperFortresses. The correspondent adds that international aspects of the landings were complicated by the fact that at the time Russia'was not at war with Japan. Under a strict interpretation of international law a neutral country is authorised to impound aircraft and intern military personnel of a belligerent nation landing in neutral territory.
