FIRST SHOW IN CANTERBURY
(P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 16. Tlie high- south-westerly wind which swept Canterbury province on Friday and Saturday brought, the first snow of the year to the mountains and foothills, and frequent heavy showers of rain and occasional *hail to the plains. The wind abated this morning, but at no time did it approach in strength the gale which dislocated shipping movements in Cook Strait and caused damage in Wellington. After a spell of warm, dry weather, the southerly brought unseasonable cold to Canterbury and some losses among .newly-shorn sheep in the high country are expected. Harvesting will be interrupted and grass seed crops will probably suffer. Apart from this, little damage was done. Road and * rail services were not affected, and telephone and power services were not interrupted, although the Christchurch Telegraph Office had a busy time to-day dealing with delayed messages from North Island stations.
