YACHTING GALA MARRED

OTAGO CLUB'S DAY

SOME EVENTS HELD

The none-too-plcasant weather on Saturday did not favour tfie Otago Taciit and Motor Boat Club’s gala day at tlie Boat Harbour. Nevertheless, there was a fair attendance of yachtsmen and friends of tile club. The | appearance of father Neptune and the I swimming events had to lie abandonned becauso of the cold, but in the afternoon it was found possible to run some sailing events, ana launch trips into the harbour were an additional thrill for the youngsters. There were 18 entrants for the allcomers’ yacht race, handicapped on the Mark Toy system, which was the first event for the "day. Southerly squalls struck the boats during the race, and Oakie capsized, while Awhtea had to withdraw after losing her spinnaker. AVhitewiiigs, with a handicap of 20 'minutes, beat Heather, off 19 minutes, by a _ minute and a-liatf across the line to. win, with Rival, sailing off the 11minute mark, only 15 seconds farther astern in third place. The other starters were Kia Ora, Awatea, Shadow, Lynette, Avenger, Rawerie, Delight, Thermopylae, Welcome, Cavalier, Rewa, Vagabond, Toroa, Oakie, and: Sunrav.

’Conditions"were little better iii the afternoon, when seamanship races for X class, I class, and Z class yachts were held. In these races additional points are.awarded for skilful handling, and competitors had to give of their best. The winner of the X class event was Lynette from Delight, by four minutes, and the Tdlealong race went to Vagabond, a minute ahead, of Cavalier, with Heather three minutes astern in third place. Sunray, sailing a lone race, took, the Takapuna event. The last race, one for lady skippers, attracted only, two competitors.
