Passengers for the north to-day were Mies N. P. Shand, Mr it. R. Richardson (Christchurch), Mr J. A. (Race; Mr W. J. (Riddell, Father Hussey, Mr C. W. McMurray, Mr F. E. Boulton, Mr W. D. Barr, Mrs E. Lepper, Misa C. McCarthy, Mr G. L. - Riley (Wellington), Mr H. Kwok; Mr G. Wong, Mr J. Luff, Mr H. Bunn (Auckland). Mr G. R. Ritchie left for the north this morning. Mr A. Wachner, Mayor of.lnvercargill, was a through passenger by the express from the south this morning, en route to Christchurch to attend a , meeting of the executive of the South Island Local (Bodies Association. Mr J. B. Thomson, editor of the ‘ Gisborne Herald,’ . who has been spending a holiday in ; Dunedin, left ■ this morning on nis return' north. The name of J. G. Laurenson (Dunedin) was omitted inadvertently, from the ‘ Star’s ’ list of those passing the ' 1 school certificate examination. At the meeting of the St. Kilda Borough Council last night the Mayor, Mr N. D. Anderson, referred to the death of (Mr John Watson, formerly Mayor of Port Chalmers. Councillor* stood in silence as a mark of respect. Mr E. Clay, who has been appointed manager for Otago , of the New Zealand Insurance Company Ltd., in succession to Mr A. M. Cameron, who i» retiring at the end of this month after 43£ years’ service with the company, arrived in Dunedim on Friday evening. Mr P. C. Webb, who recently retired from political life after serving as a Minister of the Crown since the Labour Government came into office in 1935, entered Lewisham Hospital yesterday for treatment. For the past two years Mr Webb has not enjoyed good health, and ; on several occasions has been a jpatienV in hospital. Some time ago he 'underwent an operation in London for the removal of an eye. On Friday afternoon the- staff of the Hillside Railway Workshops met to bid farewell to _Mr E. R. Latimer, who has retired after 40 years’ service with the department. Mr Latimer commenced his railway service at Hillside as an apprentice fitter on January 22, 1907. On the completion of his apprenticeship he went oversea* with the Ist N.Z.E.F. and was severely wounded. In 1925 he was promoted to be sub-foreman at the Locomotive Depot at Linwood. From this position he transferred to Addington Workshops, and from there to Otahuhu Workshops until 1939, when he became workshops . foreman, .at ~ 'Greymouth. His next promotion was to the position, of machine shop foreman at Hillside, where he eventually took over the position of works manager. Mr Latimer received several gifts, and the ceremony was marked by speeche* by the officers and staff of the workshops. Appreciation of the work done ,by Miss Nola Luxford was expressed by the Prime Minister, the (Rt Hon. P. Fraser, yesterday at an informal ceremony at Parliament House, when h* presented her with a pendant encased in a small box of polished New. Zealand wood, reports an Association message from Wellington. The gift ’ was the work of disabled servicemen, and the pendant was fashioned, from paua shell and Waihi gold. ' Miss Luxford, who is leaving New Zealand shortly, said she would value the gift as showing appreciation of the work . done, not only by herself, but by other volunteers.
