CHINA’S ECONOMY

HEADED FOR DISASTER CIVIL WAR MUST END (Rec. 8 a.m.) NEW YORK, January 27. Although the Chinese Government delayed an immediate economic crash by credit subsidies to hard-pressed business interests, Wang Hsia Lai, chairman of- the National Chamber of Commerce, predicted an economic debacle this spring unless the civil war ended, says the ‘ New York Times ’ Shanghai correspondent. An appeal for peace, with a manifesto asserting that “if hostilities do not stop the date of China’s total collapse will not be far off,” has been issued by 80 independent business, financial, and professional leaders. They said they were organising a national “ mobilising for peace ” movement and were planning possible peace missions both to Nanking and to Yenan.
