NEW YORK, January 27.—Paul Robeson announced that he intended to abandon the theatre and concert stage for the next two years “to talk up and down the nation against race hatred and prejudice.”

The tjugmcn’.s defection (see page 4) represents the most serious happening during the Wanganella salvage operations. Among officials connected' with those operations there was this morning an air of gravity contrasting sharply with the optimism apparent yesterday. Salvage preparations are not yet held up because of the loss of the tugs’ services, but will be delayed presently unless the trouble is ended;—Press Association.
