THE WATERFRONT DEADLOCK.
STOP PRESS
It was announced to-day that the Wellington Tramway Workers’ Union had met and carried a resolution supporting the Federation of Labour on the waterfront issue. The significance of this lies in the fact that the union is a component of the Transport Federation, which recently offered to intervene in the deadlock and take over the case of the watersiders, also an affiliation, with the object of reaching a settlement. At the time there was a tendency to regard this as full support for the watersiders, with possibilities of the other transport unions becoming involved, and threatening the position and prestige, of the Federation of Labour. Xo statement on this aspect is available from the waterside leaders, who are still in con- , sultation with Cabinet, but earlier to-day Messrs Barnes and Hill expressed satisfaction with the amount of support accorded their cause by outside unions.—Press Association.
ILEX R'ECROSSING TASMAN. The Wellington ketch Ilex, which competed in . the SydneyHobart yacht race, is now returning from Hobart to her borne port. The vessel’s radio position at 9 a.m. to-day was about halfway across the Tasman, and she was making about seven knots.—Auckland Association message.
