DEATH SENTENCES PASSED
WARSAW, January 14
In addition to Count Grocholski, death sentences were also passed on Waldemar Baczak, a Polish Foreign Office employee, and Witold Kalicki, a Polish army doctor. A woman secretary was sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment. ' .The president of the court said that the three men had been under foreign orders, and they had gathered material and given it to “a diplomatic representative of a foreign State.” Mr Lewis Massey, the third secretary of the British Embassy, was present when.the sentences were read.
[Earlier messages reported that Count Grocholski, the alleged underground leader and agent of General Anders, would face charges of collaboration with the Germans ■ and the murder of several members of the underground movement. A correspondent of the North American Newspaper Alliance reported that the trial would also directly involve the British Ambassador, Mr Victor Cavendish-Ben-tinck, in an alleged conspiracy to overthrow the Polish Government. The British Foreign, Office later expressed the opinion that the Ambassador had not been engaged in any improper activities. He was recalled, to Britain prior to the commencement of the trial.]
