HOUSES UNROOFED

OPOTIKI, January 15. Probably the strongest gale ever experienced in tli© Opotiki district blew for several hours early this morning fronr the south-east. The storm left a trail of damage over the whole district, many buildings having the iron torn from the roots. In several instances chimneys were blown down, and trees were uprooted. Severe damage was done to crops, fruit trees, and. gardens. Roads were blocked by fallen trees, and there were considerable interruptions to power and telephone connections. There were several, narrow escapes, from injury from flying iron and falling trees.
