RICCARTON CANDIDATES

L. J. ELLIS’S PROGRAMME (Special.) CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 9. The Chokebore stable will be represented on the second day of the Wellington meeting by Hart Royal and Grande Melee. Neither has shown very encouraging form in recent weeks and their prospects at Trentham would not appear very bright. There, is a possibility that, if both Golden Souvenir and Bruce start in the Wellington Cup, C. T. Wilson will ride Golden Souvenir and that W. J. Broughton may be secured for Bruce. L. J. Ellis will ride Bruce on Saturday and will also have the mount on Cipher, who has only to race up to his ability to have a good chance in his six-furlong engagement.

. Other engagements, for the first day’s programme include—C. T. Wilson: Battle Abbey, Lincoln Fair, Foxhaven, Al-Sirat. R. Bnmell: Kartikeya, Indian Dawn, Diameter. K. Thomson: Battle Chief. R. Hawes: Ruling Moment. J. McFarlane: Beautiful, Robingay. M. McClintock: Helio, Revolte. A. Stokes: Derene, Armont. C. Stokes, Rahine. With her stable mates, Leigh Barton, Montezuma, and Zorro, Palm Bearer will not be sent to. Trentham. She has been put off commission and. is to be given a lengthy spell. This ’Coronach filly showed great early promise, but has never been properly right since she suffered injuries on a trip home from Wellington last January. Lady Welbeck was nominated for the Wellington meeting, but will not make the trip. She has been suffering from a bruised heel since she raced at Riccarton last month and has not been able to do any work. Lunaria has been taken up again by G. Barr with a view to winter racing. His activities were restricted ■ last season because of leg trouble, and during his spell in his home paddocks he was blistered. It is thought he will stand up to another serious preparation, and, if so, he 'will be giyen a chance over country.
