NEW ZEALAND BUTTER
PART OF BRITISH QUOTA FGR CANADA SAFEGUARDING BAGON ARB CHEESE mm (Rec. 11.40 a.m.) LONDON", Jan. 8. An Ottawa report states that ship loads of New Zealand butter, are being diverted from Britain to Canada to avoid a cut in the Canadian ration of six ounces, it is understood here that at least 5,000 tons of New Zealand butter will be shipped, and it is likely that supplies will also be sent from Australia. This diversion, 'it is stated, by no means indicates an easing of Britain’s fat position, which remains almost desperate. , It is due to several reasons, including the fact that the lifting of American controls caused certain complications. in Canada. In addition, the Canadian dairying season has been poor, and this faced the Canadian Government -with the necessity of reducing the ration to four ounces unless extra supplies were imported. If the ration were reduced it was felt that there would result an ending of other controls; including those covering bacon and cheese. Thus, though Britain urgently needs the butter, she agreed to a diversion to Canada of a proportion of her supplies in order that Canada may maintain both her ration and the export of bacon and cheese to Britain.
