GENEROUS GESTURE

PARCELS FOR BRITISH EX-SERVICEMEN EFFORTS OF R.S.A. Ex-servicemen in Great Britain are to be the regular recipients of parcels from branches of the (Returned Services’ Association in various _ parts of the Dominion. This decision is the result of communications between the British Empire Service League, the parent body of returned servicemen’s organisations throughout the Empire, and the New Zealand (R.S.A. They will be, sent to 100 towns in the United Kingdom. Edinburgh has been appropriately allocated to the Returned Servicemen’s Associations of Dunedin and Invercargill, two New Zealand cities with a Scottish background. Already Dunedin has shipped 120 parcels by the steamer Somerset, which sailed on December 27. The secretary of the Dunedin R.S.A. has received a list of the names of 100 ex-servicemen and widows of servicemen Jn Edinburgh, and an endeavour will be made to send a parcel to each of these once a month. The matter is under consideration by the executive of the Dunedin R.S.A., and possibly an appeal will be made to individual members of the association for contributions towards the cost of the effort. In forwarding the list of the names of 100 ex-servicemen and wjdows to the association in Dunedin, the secretary of the British Legion in Edinburgh expresses sincere thanks to members for their kindness in deciding to forward parcels. “As you are no doubt aware,” says the writer, “things are still' difficult here and many of our members are unemployed.” The parcels already sent from Dunedin contain tins of condensed milk, canned cheese, jam in tins, tinned meat, slireddo, lard or dripping, two packets of crystals, and powdered milk.
