(From Our Correspondent.) PERSONAL. Mr and Mrs J. P. Wallace and family, who for the past nine and ahaif years have been living in boutli Africa, returned to New Zealand in the Dominion Monarch and intend to again take up residence in the Dominion. Prior to going to South Africa Mr Wallace was in business in Balclutlia as a plumber. _ Mrs H. P. Vezey, who died in her eighty-first year at Dunedin oil New Year's Day, was for many years resident in Balclutha, where she and her husband conducted the well-known .Commercial boarding house. Mr Vezey died some years ago, and Mrs Vezey is survived by a son (Mr H. A. Vezey, Ashburton) and a daughter (Mrs J. A. Peat, Dunedin). At a social function arranged by the staff of .the Balclutlia Hospital, opportunity was taken to make a presenta-, tion of-books to Dr D. M. Frengley on bis retirement as superintendent after a number of years. - .Matron Anderson and Mr W. Sutherland (chairman of the Hospital Board) paid 'glowing tributes to Dr Frengley. Reference was also made to the departure of Drs A. F. Shaw and J. M. Wilson, and thanks were expressed to them for their work while on the hospital stall. An informal welcome was also tendered Dr J. R. Turner, the new medical •superintendent, and floral tributes ■were presented to Mesdames Frengley, Turner and W.- L. Dodds.
Adjutant and Mrs G. Fitness, who have been officers in charge of tlie Salvation Army at Balclutlia for the ipast -two years, are under orders to transfer to Mosgiel. and their: farewell services here will be held next' Sunday. RAINFALL. The rainfall in Balclutlia for December ' totalled 2.17 in. Rain fell on 21 days, the heaviest fall (30 points) being recorded on the<27th. In December, 1945, 3.91 inches were recorded on 20 days. '■ , VITAL STATISTICS. Tlie vital statistics for Balclutlia for December showed an appreciable increase in births and marriages, tlie figures being 18 and seven, compared with 13 and three in December, 1945. The. number of deaths recorded was 10, compared with six. For the year the figures were: Births 177 (1945. 158), deaths 72 (72), marriages 57 (33). The number of births notified in Balclutlia for the year was 216, compared with 202 in 1945. CRICKET,

BOWLING. , On Saturday a successful pairs •tournament under the auspices of the ’ Stirling Club was held on the Balclutha and Stirling greens, 24 pairs taking part. The weather was fine in the morning, but the sky became overcast later in the day, and a heavy shower- in the afternoon held play up for a short period. The sectional play was finished,, but the semi-final and final had to be abandoned owing to heavy rain, and these will be played at- Stirling on Tuesday evening. On the Balclutlia green, W. H. Nelson and J. McDonald (Balclutha), won outright with four wins, while on the Stirling grfen, W. Sutherland and L. J. Edwards (Balclutha), and A. Botting and partner. (Stirling), each had four wins, leaving three pairs to- play off. -Edwards and l McDonald had started tlie semi-final when play was stopped. The winner of this game will play Sotting in the filial. Next Saturday the second 'round of inter-club fixtures will commence, the draw being': Milton v. Stirling, at Stirling; Clinton V; Kaitangata, at Kaitangata; Owaka v. Clutha B, at Balclutha; Clutha A a bye.
