Lindwall's Lively Century

MELBOURNE, January 6. Australia placed itself in a commanding position in the third test thatch against England as the result of some dashing batting by Morris, Lindwall, and Tallon in their second innings . yesterday, the last wicket falling at 536. This left Engand with 551 to win with 435 minutes of play when they started the fourth innings of the game. England made 91 without loss, and now have a slight hope of a drawn game. The attendance was 46,431, and the gate takings £5,934 gross. Brisk batting by McCool and Morris delighted the early crowd this morning. Morris made 155 runs’ in. 364 mmutes and hit eight 4’s in an excellent innings. Johnson, in trying a short run, was thrown out by Washbrook, the scoring ■ pair colliding with Compton, Johnson falling as he strove desperately to make his ground. McCool-flicked at an off ball .and was neatly caught. He made 43 in 108 . minutes, his score including three 4’s. Lindwall, who was hit by Edrich on the leg, retailiated with a grand off drive and cover drive, each adding .4. Neat driving was seen from / Tallon, who. hit successive no-balls from (Bedser straight and high oyer cover for 4’s. He square cut Wright next for 4 and swung QBedaer for 4. . BAD LUCK FOR TALLON. Batting merrily and meritoriously, Tallon made 50 in 65 minutes. The new ball did not quell him,-for with grand driving and pulling he made 11 off Voce’s over. Lindwall was also powerful with his off drive and cut, scoring successive 4’s off Becker, making 14 off the over. When a glorious cover drive by Tallon hit the fence ,the partnership had reached the century in 58 minutes’ play. Ikin missed a hard catch from Lindwall, whose 3 • off Hutton gave him 52 in 76 minutes. A magnificent 6 by Lindwall off Hutton brought the partnership to 154 in 88 minutes. Tallon mistimed a ball from Wright and was caught easily by the bowler. He was unfortunate in missing his century. He batted for 105 minutes and scored 10 4’s. Lind- , wall. reached 80 with three glorious drives in succession-off Bedser. Compton beautifully caught Dooland at tne fence during the next over. Lindwall needed 19 when Toeliack came in; and . golf them, with a glorious off drive for 4 through the reinforced field. He went out the same over jafteribatting’for 113 minutes and scoring 13 4’s and one 6. It was a grand - display of sustained driving. • ' The , players on both sides lined up when the Duke, and Duchess of Gloucester, went on to the ground to •hake hands with each player.
