BISHOP OF WELLINGTON
REV. R. H. OWEN APPOINTED DISTINGUISHED CHURCHMAN (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 15. The Rev. Reginald Herbert Owen, M.A., Fellow and Chaplain of Brasenose College, Oxford, has been offered and has accepted the Bishopric of Wellington, made vacant by the, resignation of the Right Rev. Herbert St. Barbe Holland. This announcement was made to-day by the Primate of New Zealand, Archbishop West-Watson, who said he had received a cable of acceptance from the bishop-designate. The Rev. Mr Owen is a graduate of Oxford University, where he had a distinguished career. He was a scholar of Wadham College, and gained his B.A. in 1910. He took the M.A. degree in 1913. He was ordained as a deacon in 1917 and a priest in 1918 by the Bishop of Peterborough In 1912 he was made a Fellow of Worcester College, Oxford, and honorary fellow in 1932. He was a select preacher at Oxford University in 1926 and at Cambridge University in 1935. From 1916 until 1934 he was head master of Uppingham School, resigning in the latter year when he was appointed a Fellow and Chaplain of Brasenose College. Early in the war he volunteered and was appointed as a chaplain to the Navy, and served in that capacity for 5| years. At the conclusion of the war he returned to his duties as Fellow and Chaplain of Brasenose College. Mr Owen is married and has no children. The date of his I 'consecration and enthronement is at present uncertain.
