Bowling: Greens Soft and Heavy

Few Practice Games

(By “ Measurer.”)

Owing to the “ early winter ” which we have been experiencing, the Match Committee was compelled to cancel the second match of the Saturday series scheduled for last week. The weather lias been so inclement and tlie condition of the greens so soft and heavy, and often unplayable, that few practice games have even been possible. Wednesday Competition. Although conditions for play were anything but attractive, the weather held off long enough to allow the first round of tlie competition to be completed. The following table shows the results of'the day’s play

Holmes Feathers (Four Rink) Competition. Although, no doubt, a large majority of competitors in the four-rink matches would have preferred to stay home by the fire on - Monday evening, the centre’s Match Committee saw no reason to declare a general postponement, and only St. Kilda and Logan Park failed to face the music. This game was played on Wednesday evening, the result coming to hand too late for inclusion in these' notes. The remainder of the games were completed on Monday night, results in most cases being conclusive, only two games (Kaituna v. Mornington and Green Island v. Taieri) showing a close finish. The results, with the exception of the unplayed game, were as follows: —Balmacewen 92, Opoho 54; Kaikorai 82, Caversliam 65; St. Clair 85, Tainui 48; Kaituna 82. Mornington 79; Green Island 80, Taieri 75; Caledonian 82, Anderson's Bay 73; Dunedin 92; West Harbour 49; Otago 85, Port Chalmers 59; Leith 92, Roslyn 74. Central Otago News. The interclub shield matches commenced on Saturday - last in blustery weather, 10 clubs participating. The Wakatipu Club made its first appearance in the competition and won two of its three games against Arrowtown. The largest entry came from Alexandra, with nine fours, followed by Cromwell, with seven. The Millers Elat green was waterlogged, and the match between that club and Roxburgh was transferred to the (Roxburgh green. Wanaka scored a “ possible,” with three wins, against Cromwell, Perrow and Walker winning by wide margins and Stevenson just getting home by 2 points from Austin. The detailed results are as follows: Wanaka, 3 wins, no losses, 12 points; Alexandra, 6,3, 8; Millers Flat, 2, 1,8; Wakatipu, 2,1, 8; Roxburgh, 3, 2, 7 1-5; "Clyde, 2,2, 6; Arrowtown, 1,2,4; Cromwell, 2,5, 3 3-7; Bannockburn, 1,3, 3; Omakau, 1,4, 2 2-5. It is good to see that the easing of restrictions on transport has enabled this competition to be fully revived, as it will give keen interest to the bowlers of Central Otago. Naseby defaulted its challenge for the Jolly Memorial, and Smith, of Cromwell, the next challenger, will be given his opportunity this week. ■’'Membership of the Central clubs continues, as elsewhere, to increase, and Alexandra has now over 60 members, Cromwell about 45, and Clyde 30. Cromwell has had the misfortune to lose the valued services of Clarrie Elder as secretary, and he will be hard to replace, while Clyde has suffered a similar loss by the resignation of Neil Taylor.

Leading—New Style! To have two touchers in the ditch, with the jack almost alongside, was the remarkable performance of a novice St. Clair player in his first game of bowls, in the opening match of the season against Roslyn. Called in at the last minute to take the place of a regular player who did not appear, the

novice played as lead. In the head in which he secured the double, his first bowl, delivered at a fairly fast pace, touched the jack and went into the ditch, while his second shot gathered up the jack and took it into the ditch. It has been suggested that the repetition of such a feat should carry the penalty which goes with “ holing in one ” at golf.
