Angling: Rivers in Poor Condition

During last week-end anglers were faced with poor conditions. There was a biting wind, and several rivers were high and discoloured. The party which visited the Waikouaiti ltiver did not meet with much success, and of five fish caught the largest was only 21b. In the opinion of those who frequent this river the absence of fish is due to flood waters having washed away* the available food. Weed banks that held an abundance of food in previous years are now covered with silt and gravel. It was noticeable that the fish caught were in poor condition. Prospects are not good for the Otago Club’s competition, on November 23. The Shag ltiver is’in a similar state to the Waikouaiti River, but good fishing has been reported in its tidal waters. The Tomahawk Lagoon is reported to be fishing well. Activities Next Week-end. There will be plenty of activity among the Otago clubs next week-end, nid on Saturday a gold medal competition, open to all license holders, will lie held on the Waipalu River. Record entries have been received,’ and for

that reason a stretch of water which in previous years was allocated to one angler, will be fished this year, by two anglers. On Sunday the Harry Williams Shield competition will be held on the Pomahaka River. Fourteen teams of three anglers, representing seven clubs, have entered for this competition, and good baskets are expected. The following anglers will represent 'the Otago Club: —No. 1 team; Rhodes, Barnes, and Fraser. No. 2 team: Mitchell, S. Williams, and O. Williams. <* Affiliated Clubs’ Meeting. The first meeting of affiliated clubs is set down for November 23. Delegates from seven clubs will attend this meeting, and it is hoped that in the near future all clubs in Otago will have linked up. Fairlie Shield, ' The interclub competition held last Saturday between Kaitangata and Clinton for the Fairlie Shield resulted as follows:—Clinton, 25 fish, 531 b l5oz; Kaitangata, 21 fish, 321 b loz.
