FAIR DEAL WANTED
MR N. H. JONES ON REHABILITATION “ To hear Labour politicians talking glibly about preferences and priorities for ex-servicemen is just so much hot air and meaningless platitude, for these individuals know only too well that there is precious little made available to ex-servicemen in that line,” said Mr Norman Jones, National candidate for North Dunedin, in the course of his address at Ravensbourne last night. “ I personally am not so keen on all this preference and priority angle as I am on seeing that the returned servicemen ahd servicewomen receive a fair deal,” continued Mr Jones, “ but many of them are not even getting that. How can they be when in the main they are materially and financially worse off to-day than before their enlistment? _ To merely talk preference and priority to our ex-service personnel is lust so much political ton-sil-airing. Giving them a home of their own, a job of their own and, above all, a faitli in the future isn’t any sort of preference or priority—it is just a fair deal, and a fair deal is something many of , them are not receiving to-day.”
“ Private enterprise is on trial so far as the coal, timber, and cement industries are concerned,” said Mr A. E. Armstrong, Labour candidate for Napier. “If they cannot produce the goods in the quantities required, the Government will compensate .the owners aud give the workers the right to own and control those industries, and they will be able to devise ways and means for themselves of increasing production,” said the speaker. ® “ The only thing the Labour Government has ever accomplished in respect to increasing production is to increase the production of bank notes, and they have done this so proficiently that if we do not call a halt soon we shall all be consuming funny money instead of edible produce—and it will be tough chewing.” Mr Norman Jones, National candidate, at Ravensbourne.
