RAILCAR AND LORRY
COLLISION NEAR UPPER HUTT DRIVER CATAPULTED FROM LORRY CAB (P.A.)) WELLINGTON, Nov. 13. When the Wellington-Masterton railcar and a motor lorry collided two miles south of Upper Hutt shortly before 6.45 last night, the railcar was partly derailed and the lorry driver was catapulted from thf cab of the lorry, receiving severe injuries. He was Private Dereck Robinson, aged 521, stationed at Trenthairi military camp. Robinson was admitted to hospital suffering from deep lacerated wounds to the scalp and face, shock, and concussion. Several of the railcar’s 42 passengers were dazed by the suddenness of the impact, and one of them; Mrs Milhcent Ward, who was returning to her homo in Masterton, was admitted to hospital suffering from shock. Although the front of the railcar was damaged, the driver escaped injury. The lorry was almost completely wrecked. The partial derailment blocked the line, and the passengers continued their journey in railway buses.
