LEFT THEIR JOB

WATERSIDERS AT POLITICAL MEETING While the Dunedin public attended a community sing, held in the Main Town Hall last night, to raise funds in the Food. for Britain campaign, watersiders engaged in loading frozen meat and other produce for the United Kingdom on the Pakeha and Hororata, at present berthed at Port Chalmers,' stopped work to listen to a political address by the Minister of Health, the Hon. A. H. Nordmeyer. Considering that work on these ships was held up last week because of bad weather the action of the watersiders is difficult to understand, and the waterfront controller was at a loss to explain their action, when questioned by a ‘ Star ’ representative today. Work done between. 6 p.m. and 9 p.’m. is counted as overtime, but according to the orders of the Waterfront Industry Commission, watersiders cannot stop work in a body between these hours The monthly stop-work meeting or watersiders was held between 8 a.m. and 10.30 a.m. yesterday, and it seems reasonable to suggest that an opportunity to hear Mr Nordmeyer could have been taken then.
