WASTED BANANA CARGO
1,000 CASES DUMPED STORED IN WARM QUARTERS ' (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 12. When the motor ship Port Alma left Lyttelton this afternoon for Port Chalmiers she carried on deck more than 1,000 cases of bananas which will be dumped at sea. The bananas are part Of a consignment of 2,328 cases which were loaded at Suva on tfic voyage from London to Lyttelton for the Internal Marketing Division. The fruit to be dumped has, it is alleged, gone bad through being ato wed in the locker room of No. 2 hold,. in which the temperature was well over lOOdeg. Waterside workers at. Lyttelton were prepared to work overtime on Saturday night and even OH Sunday to get the fruit out. until they were informed that the fruit uploaded on Thursday, because of the holiday, was still in tne hands of the Railways Department. That, and the condition of the fruit decided them pot to work further overtime on the consignment. Some of the bananas received _ in Christchurch will require repacking, and the cost of this will be paid by the Internal Marketing Division. The Port Alqia also brought a shipment °f pineapples, some of which were lo”nil to be affected with mealy bug, These will he fumigated to kill the bugs,'
