Wantwood’s Rider. K. Nuttall lias been engaged to ride Wantwood in the Stewards’. Handicap. The Salmagundi gelding will-be taken to Riccarton after the Southland meeting, where he will start if the going is favourable. In Great Heart. A Wellington : report states that Howe, the early favourite for the New Zealand Derby, is in great , heart, and promises to strip at his best at Riccarton. On Tuesday morning he worked over seven furlongs at even time (about 15sec to the furlong). Races Consistently. Although lie' has failed to return a dividend' at the Metropolitan Cup Meeting, Gamble King has registered two useful performances and may be found reaching a place before the meeting is concluded. The Gamble gelding has raced consistently for W. R. Butt this season, having won once and been twice second. Consistent Trotter. Although she may not be so brilliant as some of the trotters who will oppose her in the Intermediate Handicap at Addington on Friday,’ Royal Dale is entitled to strong support because

of her consistency. She rarely makes a mistake in races and has only finished further back than fourth once this season. Failed to Carry on. Lucky Loyal and Cameronian, who both carried strong support in the Horiiby Handicap last Friday, were up with the leaders at the three-furlong post, but failed to carry on when the pressure was applied. For horses which have proved themselves as stayers, the showing was a disappointing one. Knave of Diamonds. v According to his driver, 0. E. Hooper, Knave of Diamonds had not been asked for an effort in the New Zealand Cup when he struck trouble at the straight entrance. He is engaged in the Intermediate Sprint Handicap on Friday, and as he has previously raced well over short distances, he must bo given a chance. Sir Michael, who is 12yds behind, will offer most opposition. Broughton Has Useful Lead. W. J. Broughton has established a useful lead in the jockeys’ premiership, his success on Prince Wan aka at Levin on Saturday ' bringing his total winning mounts for the current term to 24. His nearest rival is last season’s leading horseman, N. B. Holland, who brought his total to 16 when he rode two winners at Ellerslie on Saturday. Next-on the list are A. C. Messervy (1.1) and G. F. Hughes (10). Speedy Trotter. Rerewaka is nicely placed on the limit in the opening event at Addington on Friday, and would only need to remain at his correct gait to collect his second stake for the meeting. In the Holmwood Handicap he showed a rare turn of speed to win with something in reserve after losing about 48yds at the start. He got, near the leaders three furlongs from home, and from that stage nothind had a chance with him. He has, however, proved to be very unreliable, and on numerous occasions he has ruined his chances by breaking. Turco’s Prospects.

Last week in the Sprint Championship, in which Turoo dead-heated with Haughty, and Josedale Grattan finished third, Turoo was meeting most of the field on worse terms than he would have in a handicap race. Nothing finished better than lie did in the straight and that showing suggests, that he will be hard to beat ip the Ollivier Handicap on Friday. In this week’s race Josedale Grattan, who must be. considered one of his most formidable opponents, will meet Turco on 24yds worse terms. If Cup form can be ta'ken as a guide, Integrity should again beat Josedale Grattan as he now meets the Aucklander 12 yards better. Strong Trio. Bonnie Jack, Lou Hall, and Stimuland ffrom a strong trio on the 36yds mark in- the. November Handicap, and are likely to carry most support. Bonnie Jack, a member of F. J. Smith’s team, won impressively last Friday, although the field she beat was a weak one. Lou Hall has run two sound races at the meeting to Secure two third plaeings. She is racing well at present and with average luck will win a stake outright before the meeting ends. W. R. Butt has not met with success during the first two days of the Metropolitan meeting. His team lias been racing well, however, and Stimulant may be the horse to break the run of outs. Going Heavy at Invercargill. The outside of the course proper, which was open for galloping at Invercargill yesterday morning, was on tho heavy side, and the times recorded' were slow. Apart from a brief hail storm during the morning,- the weather was fine. One of the best gallops of the morning was put up by Royal Coon, who covered the last six of seven f-urlongs on 1.22 2-5, time which gives a fair indication of the state of the going. - The poles were ,35ft out. Salad was shading Signal Officer at the end of a mile in 1.53, the last six taking 1.23 3-5. The Invercargill track dries out quickly, and if favoured by fine weather during the next few days the going has every prospect of being reasonably good by Saturday. .

Salmagundi’s Stock. A feature of the racing at the 'Winton Jockey Club’s meeting on Saturday, was the success of the stock of the defunct 'ire Salmagundi, who was represented by four winners of the six galloping events. The Winners were

Desert Girl, Salad, Excellency, and Wantwood, while he was represented by place getters in Salmon Spear, Spare Part, Special Flight, and Golden Chips. Since Salmagundi was brought from Australia, where he was labelled as an uncertain foal getter, ho has left many good winners, and was one of the most successful sires ever to stand in Southland. His stock have proved very versatile, for, as well as being at home under all conditions, they can both sprint and stay, At the present time his progeny are in keen demand, and any that are placed on the sale list bring good prices.
