D. V. WRIGHT.

WRIGHT AND VOCE DISMISS VICTORIA CHEAPLY SLOW BOWLER’S FINE PERFORMANCE MELBOURNE, November 1. England added nine runs to-day in a blustery wind. Victoria started badly, .Meuleman poking at an. off ball, was caught behind point by Yardley. Tamblyn and Harvey went the same way, being deceived by the flight of Wright’s dropping delivery. Harvey was stroking well and confidently looking for runs. He batted for 44 minutes and hit three fours. After lunch Miller and Hassett fought back against good bowling. Voce had a long spell, but he was slightly under length, the ball occasionally keeping low. Each batsman had met Wright in the last English season while with the services, but each handled him gingerly. They added 64 in 82 minutes before Miller was caught off his shoulder. He had added a valuable, though quiet, 32.

Hassett was just beginning to sparkle in his best style when he mistimed a pull and was easily caught after an artistic innings. He was in for 103 minutes and hit four 4’s. Johnson was defending soundly and scoring quickly with varied shots. Overthrows off Voce gave him a 4. The total at this stage was 150, the last 50 being put on in 40 minutes. Johnson took charge when Hassett left, swinging Voce for 4. A rising ball led to a catcli behind the wickets and Freer was brilliantly caught by one hand in the slips off the next ball. Voce made a desperate attempt to catch Ring for the hat trick, but just failed to reach the ball, Wright finished off the innings with his last three wickets for two- runs, giying him a fine six for 48. The wicket was wearing and thus helped the bowlers. England began its second innings in a dull light. An appeal for a catch behind the wickets from Hutton off Johnston was not allowed. The next ball, a hard catch in the slips, was. missed. Nine balls had been bowled when an appeal against the light was upheld. There was an attendance of ! 15,324, and the gate takings were £l,lOO.
