WAR BRIDE ROBBED
COSTLY EXCURSION FROM SHIP (P.A.) AUCKLAND, November I.' Four hours after the Monterey arrived from Sydney this morning a passenger was robbed of her handbag containing money and travellers’ cheques to the value of *• about 500 dollars while she was shopping in a Queen street department store. She was Mrs O. M. Whitney, an Australian war bride, who ww on her way to the United States with her young son. The shop was crowded. Amorig the contents of the purse were £75 worth of American dollar bills, £75 in travellers’ cheques, and £25 in Australian currency. There was also a boat ticket from Sydney to Sap Francisco for'herself and her son. The purse and contents had not been recovered by 5 p.m., when Mrs Whitney resumed her voyage on the Monterey. A representative ,of the shipping company said the ticket whioh she had in her purse was only a carbon copy of the original, which was taken from her when she hoarded the vessel at Sydney. It was for .use as an identity check during the voyage, _ and its loss would not cause her serious in-r convenience.
