CHINESE FORCES ATTACK CHEFOO
FIERCE STRUGGLE INDICATED
(IRec. 8 a.m.) NANKING, Oct. 30. Government troops made four amphibious landings near Chefoo, and a major battle appears to be developing for this Communist base.
A Peiping despatch reports 1 hat 30,000 Communists- have sailed from Southern Manchuria in junks to build up the Chefoo garrison. Government planes, destroyers, and gunboats are attempting to intercept the flow of reinforcements.
Marshal .Chiang Kai-shek has instructed the. Chinese people to abandon plans for the celebration of his sixtieth birthday. He declared that the instruction did not spring from modesty, “ but is in line with my principle of frugality.”
