FIRST FREE ELECTIONS
BERLINERS GO TO POLLS RESULTS WILL SHOW EAST OR WEST LEANING (Rec. 10.5 a.m.) LONDON, October 20. Berliners to-day went to the polls for the first free municipal elections since 1932, reports an agency correspondent xrom Berlin. The elections are being held under strict quadriipartite supervision, and as none of the occupying Powers is ' able to influence voters as in earlier zonal elections, it is expected that these elections will provide the first indication whether Germany is leaning to the East or West. . The voters are electing 130 representatives to the Berlin City Council and 845 representatives for 20 borough councils. Elections are also being held in the Russian zone to elect legislatures in each of the five States and provinces of the zone.
