COLD FRONT
gales and snow in north (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 20. After a fairly mild winter, most parts of Canterbury had snow ■to-day. tsieet fell in Christchurch in the morning, and about 4 p.m. thick, snow fell for about 20 minutes. Ram before and after the fall prevented the snow from settling. The drop in temperature was sharp. Lambing is almost over on tHe plains, and few losses are expected. In the foothills districts up to dm .fell, but was washed away later by rain. Late lambing in the hill country may be affected, The weather appeared to be clearing this evening. (P.A.) INVERCARGILL, 0ct..20. The first snow of the year fell m In-vercargill'to-day, but the flakes melted as soon as they hit the ground. Wintry conditions were experienced througnout the' province, the weather , pemg much worse than anything experienced, in the depth of winter. A cold southwest wind was also accompanied by intermittent hail and rain showers. Snow was reported to be falling heavily at Queenstown at 8 p.m. (P A.) AUCKLAND, Oct. 20. ■ An electric power failure, which lasted for 17 hours, occurred m Huntly at 4.30 p.m. yesterday during the worst electrical storm the district has experienced for many years, when lightning struck the'main bus 3 bar of the switchipg apparatus at the Huntly sub-station. The whole of the equipment at the station was put .out of order, and the township remained, m darkness throughout the might. Alter working all night, the local staff. ot the station, assisted by a gang of State hydro-electric employees, restored power at 9.30 a.m. to-day.
