BOWLING

DUNEOIN CENTRE MEETING The monthly meeting of the Otago Bowling Centre was held on Saturday night, when the president, Mr W. O. Clark, was in the chair. A discussion was held on the appointment of umpires for the fourrink- competition, several members stating that it was unfair to expect men to travel long distances to umpire in the evenings.—The. matter was left over till the next meeting. The chairman welcomed Mr P. Hellyer, representing the Waikouaiti Club on the centre, and. Mr L. gmeaton, representing Fairfield. It was decided to suggest to the Canterbury centre that the competition for the Redpath Shield be fixed for March 0. A letter was received from the Central Otago centre asking if the Otago centre would resume the prewar match between the two centres.— After several members had'stated that the trips had always been very enjoyable, it was decided to resume the match. The matter of the date of the match with the City Council for the Hislop trophy, was left in the hands of the president. (Members reported on visiting the various clubs on their opening days, and the president said that the season was certain to be a successful one. It looked, he said, as if there would be 2,000 members this year. LOGAN PARK The Logan Park Club opened the 1946-47 season on Saturday afternoon. Mr E. B. Cooper, president, welcomed a large number of members and visitors, and thanked the green supervisor and the greenkeeper . for the excellent playing surface provided, and the ladies’ section for their assistance. Mr E. Longworth, representing the Dunedin centre, congratulated the club on the appearance of the green and surroundings, and wished members a successful season, Mrs A. F. Thompson, president of the ladies’ section, welcomed the lady visitors. Mrs Longworth, vice-president of tho 0.L.8.A., also spoke. Mr N. Jolly extended greetings from the Umpires’ Association, and Mr Q. Beecroft spoke on behalf of sister clubs. Mrs Cooper rolled the first bowl, and the president declared the green open for the season. A well-attended card evening brought the proceedings to a most enjoyable conclusion. CAVERSHAM The Caversham Bowling Club opened the season on Saturday, when there was a large gathering of members and friends. The president,. Mr F. Sykes, welcomed the visitors, and thanked the green supervisor and others who had worked hard during the winter months. He also thanked the members of the Ladies’ Club for help received during the season. The Minister of Defence, Hon. F. Jones, patron of the club, conveyed Ins good wishes for a successful season. (Mr E. Rackley, on behalf of the centre, and Mr H. Colquhoun, on behalf of the Umpires’ Association, also spoke. Mrs Murray extended greetings on behalf of the Ladies’ Committee, and Mrs Seymour spoke on behalf of the ladies’ club. Mrs Sykes rolled the first bowl, and the president declared’ the season opened The green was in good condition, anil the full 10 rinks were occupied during the afternoon. The club has entered 21 rinks for the Satin dty competition, and 7 for the Wednesday games. TAIERI . The Taieri Bowling Club opened the 1946-47 season before a large gathering of members and friends on Saturday. The president, Mr L. B, Borrow, expressed the wish that the season would be a most enjoyable one. Reference was made to, the diamond jubilee functions to be held later in the season, and members were asked to assist in every way to make the celebrations successful. The president specially welcomed Mr J. A. McKinnon, the first life member of the olub. Mr W. O. Clark, president of the Otago Bowling Centre, wished the club all success in future. Other speakers were (Messrs J. J. Davis and g. Devereaux (New Zealand Bowling Association), and Mrs T. Gibson (Taieri Ladies’ Club). Mrs Borrow rolled the first bowl, and the president declared the season officially . open. Teams representing the president and vice-president enjoyed the afternoon’s play on ah excellent green. ' ST. CLAIR The St. Clair Bowling Club opened the 1946-47 season on Saturday afternoon. The president, Mr W. McLauchlan, welcomed a large attendance of visitors and members, and/ expressed the wish that the season would be a successful and enjoyable one. He. thanked the green supervisor for providing an excellent playing surface, and other members for work done in improving the amenities of the club’s premises. The membership, he said, was growing rapidly, and. to provide additional accommodation it was hoped to have the new green ready by the middle of next season. Mr A. Honeyman, representing the Dunedin Bowling Centre, congratulated the cjub on its progress, and wished members a successful season, and Mr T. Crossan conveyed the greetings of the Umpires’ Association. The Hon. F. ■„ Jones also . expressed good wishes for a successful season. Mrs W. McLauchlan, president of the ladies’ section, extended a welcome to the lady visitors, and Mrs Morrison, president of the Ladies’ Bowling Association, also spoke. Mrs McLauchlan rolled the first bowl of the season, and Mrs H. L. Humphreys rolled the first bowl on behalf of the ladies’ section, after which the president declared the green open for the season. Visitors and members enjoyed the afternoon’s play on an excellent green.
