RECORD CROWD AT CAULFIELD ROYAL NARROW WIN MELBOURNE, October 20. The weather was perfect for the Caulfield races, and the attendance a record, 107,161, the best previous attendance being 90,212. Bernborough failed ,to create the weight-carrying record in the Cup, finishing fifth after having been last at the sis furlongs. When he got dear he made up a lot of ground, but was unable to overtake the leaders. The winner, ltoyal Gem, has proved himself one of the best horses in Australia over short distances. Last Saturday he won the Toorak Handicap, hut after that performance most racegoers considered the extra half-mile too far, as he appeared to be weakening at the end of the mile. This resulted in his starting at an outside price' today, but he came home strongly to defeat Columnist, who looked all over a winner at the furlong post. Columnist was most , fancied against the hot favourite, Bernborough. Another outsider in Two Grand surprised by running a good third. The Jfew Zealand mare First In was heavily supported, but failed to show out, finishing well hack. She is likely to be better suited by the two miles of the Melbourne Cup. Royal Gem has proved very, profitable for his owner, Mr G. W. Radman, but this was his most important. success. Chaytor, second in the Metropolitan, failed to reproduce that form and was never a possibility.
