TRAFALGAR DAY
GREAT NAVAL VICTORY ANNIVERSARY TO-DAY To-day is Trafalgar Day, observed throughout the Empire, in commemoration of Nelson’s famous victory, when he defeated the French and Spanish fleets off Cape Trafalgar, on October 2], 1805. The day marks also the death of Lord Nelson, who was fatally wounded with a muskeg ball before the issue was decided. • The victory at Trafalgar marked a turning point in the Napoleonic Wars,
hut in 1805. England was plunged into mourning at the news of Nelson’s death. “The victory created none of ;those enthusiastic emotions in the public mind which the success of Our naval arms have in every former instance produced,’ ’ said' ‘ The Tillies ’ November 7. 1805, commenting on Coilingwood’s despatches describing the victory. “ There was not a man who did not think that the life of the hero of the Nile, was too great a price for the capture and destruction of 20 sail of French and Spanish men-of-war.” The Otago branch of the Navy League is celebrating the anniversary by holding ~ its annual meeting and “ at homej” in the Tudor Lounge at 7.30 this evening. '
