HONOURS WITH AUSTRALIANS

ENGLISHMEN'S UPHILL FIGHT . . PERTH, October ,20. England’s batsmen struggled against good spin bowling by the test team candidates, Bruce Dooland, of South Australia, and lan Johnson, olf Victoria, on the concluding day of the match against the Combined team. England was dismissed for 302 runs after 390 minutes’ batting. Compton, Waslibrook, Yardley, and Langridge were the only batsmen to make a stand. For most of the day the bowlers were ,on top, and even Compton, although he missed a centurv bv only two runs, was far below

his best form. He chafed under restraint, and'lie gave a stumping chance when he had made 23. He did, however, relieve dull periods.with strong pulls arid delightful square-cuts. Waslibrook was uncertain when facing the spin bowlers, and needs more practice against them. - Doolaud, aged 22, who was in New Zealand with WA Brown’s, team at the end of last season; bowled impressively, turning the ball and flighting it cleverly. Johnson’s Control was admirable. The match was drawn. Scores: — COMBINED /TEAM. First innings ... ... 462 - ENGLAND. First Innings. Hutton b Gumming ... ... ... 10 Waslibrook lbw b Dooland ...
