ENGLAND’S BAD START

TWO GOOD WICKETS GONE SET A SOLID TASK PERTH, October 18. The test record holder, Len Hutton, scored only 10 runs in an uncomfortable stay of 47 minutes against the Combined Team’s bowlers this afternoon and then played a ball from the medium paced right-hander Cumming on to the stumps. He had been most cautious against the accurate attack. The left-hander, Fishlock, also failed, being caught off the other opener, Puckett, a, fast medium, for 11. Washbrook, however, showed sound form. The Combined team had batted until 3.15 p.m., reaching the total of 462, which is a record against any English team at Perth. Watt (157) and Johnson (87) completed a sixth wicket partnership of 217 in 185 minutes. Johnson, the Victorian all-rounder, is a test team candidate. The English fielding was much improved, but the attack was weakened by the absence of Edrich, who has a carbuncle on his right arm. Scores: — COMBINED TEAM. First Innings.
